The cost to keep a state-of-the-art research facility going is also astronomical. And each research university has a number of these. The ones I've been associated with were not built and maintained by university provided budgets but rather by endowments and securing funding from alumni specifically for that purpose. This has been the case long before DEI was a thing. And one of the main contributors to the rise of college tuition has been the increasing lack of college funding at state levels.
