A study of congenital birth defect (CBD) incidence in Fallujah found that consanguinity among parents (defined as marriage to first, second or third cousins) was present in 56.8% of the observed CBD cases
Also, another possible source of uranium exposure in Iraq is the Al-Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Centre (24 miles east of Fallujah) that was bombed and looted during the 2003 invasion. Hundreds of barrels of uranium oxide went missing from the plant after it was destroyed, and only a fraction of the barrels was recovered. In some instances, empty (but still radiologically contaminated) barrels were found in nearby towns and were being used as household food and water storage containers.
