gas isn't all that high. People just like to say "when I started driving in 19____, gas was ______ cents a gallon! It was cheaper than water so people watered their lawn with it."

You ask that same person if they know what OPEC is there's a 50% chance they will. But if they do there's probably a 10% chance they can explain how OPEC works and how they influence oil supply and demand (and prices).

Also most people don't know that about how gas taxes work vary state to state either.
