The civil war may have freed the slaves but it also opened the door to a huge power grab by the federal government. I think it was a very bad trade-off. U.S. slavery was a dying institution, technology was on the way to making it obsolete. The war ended slavery a few years earlier but it also was the genesis of our current federal system.
