In case you haven't figured it out the bowl games are no longer that important, especially when you finish 6-6 and you have potentially 20+ players that may not be with the team by that point. They are prioritizing playing an early bowl game so they can work on recruiting for next year after the bowl game wraps up, which is the most important thing for next year's success. With players entering the pool every day over the next six weeks or so, it is vital that they can spend as much time as possible working on finding transfer players for next year's team. I totally understand why the coaches aren't interested in playing in a bowl game after Christmas. After all, a bowl game with a bunch of players not playing for both teams makes for a potentially sloppy game, no matter who we play.
