There’s absolutely no justification for picking six SEC teams and two big 10 teams or whatever it ends up being. There’s no mathematical certainty. If there was I would agree with you. But the teams are being “picked”by a committee and being “ranked” by a committee. So it’s completely subjective. To have any kind of credibility there has to be out of conference games with the power conferences against each other.
It’s why the college basketball system has some credibility. When you’re playing a decent Big Ten team in some tournament over Thanksgiving in the Bahamas it’s absolutely critical to your post season chances. It also adds tension and huge stakes to those games besides providing good entertainment for the fans
