Why are so many people in today's world so hateful when it comes to political views?

We used to be able to be friends with someone who had different views than us and now, (I see more liberals doing this than conservatives in my world) people post things on FB and places stating, if you think this way we cannot be friends!

I don't get it. I don't get when this world became such a place for hate amongst people you once considered friends.
