There's no single solution. We could also be more energy efficient. A little more density and public transportation would cut our energy consumption down a lot. Sprawl is an energy glutton.
I'm not anti fossil fuel. We have an abundance of natural gas. It's kind of an ignored fuel source. We've barely drilled for it in the last ten years because its been deemed virtually worthless (until the last year). We burn it off as a nuisance at the wellhead to get the oil out faster. There is a lot of stranded natural gas around the US because there is no transportation network.
