I agree with the 9 games and how you divide the other games, the only problem is that semifinals are a bad deal. First, you increase the likelyhood of a rematch - boring. Secondly, just more chances to get a playoff team knocked out.

Instead of a semi, you create 2 divisions composed of 2 pods, the divisions then rotate. You play your 3 pod teams, the 4 teams from the other pod in your division then your 2 rivals from the other 2 pods. I have a breakdown of the advantages here:
