Microsoft tried everything to create a Google competitor, and couldn't do it.

You see, once a company like Facebook or Twitter has a monopoly in its space, it's very hard to displace it.

And Twitter has a virtual monopoly as a platform for public discourse related to news & politics. It's the proverbial "town square"... When you read or watch the news, for example, comments/statements from public figures are almost always via Twitter.

Also, it's hard to beat "Twitter" and "tweet" in terms of branding.
