Folks, Gregg Marshall is a non-starter for the Tiger job for one simple reason, the potential impact of negative recruiting by other schools on the Tiger program.
There is a saying that perception is often more important than reality. The common perception is that Marshall verbally and physically abused his players at Wichita State. Doesn't matter if he did or not, that's the common perception and the reaction when you mention his name to most college basketball followers.
To win at Mizzou in the SEC, Marshall would have to recruit very well. How long do you think it would take opposing recruiters to say something like "well, you know Marshall was at Wichita State and allegedly verbally and physically abused his players" to either the kid being recruited and/or to his parents.
If Mizzou were to hire Marshall it would have to be with the knowledge that every opposing recruiter would bring up the abuse stories. That would either turn the kid and/or his parents off and they would write off Mizzou or it would make recruiting the kid so much harder (it would be an obstacle that Marshall would have to overcome every time he talked to a recruit and/or a recruit's parents).
Landing the quality of recruits that will be needed to achieve the kind of success that most of you want will be very difficult without having to overcome the Wichita State Abuse obstacles for every recruit. Tiger basketball does not need to create unnecessary obstacles to its success.
