NATO they have never invaded a European country (Yes USA invaded Iraq and Afghanistan) so the threat to current Russian borders is not there
A west leaning democratic Ukraine does not provide Russia with a buffer but this invasion will not get Putin what he wants and it will increase NATO support for their eastern members
IMO Putin gambled the west would not react this hard. He expected a repeat of Crimea
He gambled Zelensky and his government would run and collapse
Putin has not committed his best troops and that strategy has also been an early failure
