First, we would have to give him some kind of extension. Even if it's largely symbolic (i.e. the buyout is minimal). For the few fans that are left the optics of even a symbolic extension would probably be enough to make them not care anymore.
Second, there is a good chance this team is better next year. We will likely return many of the players, add Shaw, and have a shot at getting better via the portal. I'm not saying we will be good by any means, but better. So if we show improvement next year we are kind of stuck again. We fire a guy that we let go into year 2 of a rebuild that has continued to show improvement? Or are we suckered into another year beyond the next one?
The bottom line is Martin has a lot of data behind him as a P6 head coach. He is what he is, a great guy and a mediocre coach. Nobody in Tennessee or Cal were sad to see him go. Nobody will be sad to see him go now.
Martin was supposed to be the key that unlocked the pipeline to St. Louis talent. It didn't work out. Outside of the 2017 class every major St. Louis recruit went elsewhere. To add insult to injury there were a lot of local recruits that we didn't offer (or at least didn't extend a committable offer) that went elsewhere and found success. Even with landing Shaw and the Porters Martins overall recruiting at Mizzou has been poor.
IMO, there are a lot of worthy candidates at the midmajor level that we can probably get. I will not buy any excuse along the lines of "we talked to a few targets behind the scenes and they weren't interested so we decided to stick with Martin" talk. Even if the next coach doesn't pan out it is really hard to imagine they could do any worse.
