come to their aid/defense or just stick your head in the sand and walk away?

Since a kid, if I saw someone being picked on or bullied I came to their defense. I perceived it a moral obligation to stand up for those who couldn't defend themselves. Thought Americans shared those same values, guess I was wrong.

Please explain why this message is being reported.
