to disrupt some action and get a response.

While they can be annoying most people respect a non-violent protest. When those protestors cross a line is when people tend to turn against them.

The BLM protests a couple of summers ago were mostly peaceful during the daylight hours but at night they let themselves get coopted by people who were not there to protest. Their biggest mistake was not doing enough to separate themselves from the criminal element. Middle America got tired of the violence and property damage.
