A brother-in-law grew up in a rural area in southern IL.

He said that he remembers the corporal punishment they dished out.
In one instance the whole school came over to watch as a teacher, or perhaps the principal(?), took a young boy out back, had him bend over and take some whacks with a metal rod. The other kids were all cheering as he did so.
My BIL said, that kid turned out alright. He's so and so & is well respected around here.
Things are certainly a lot different now than they were back in those days.
