IMO, the Union could have been preserved and AA slavery ended without a devastating war. The plantation system was economically unsustainable, only a small fraction of Southerners owned slaves, the AA population was growing and becoming an economic burden on owners. In addition, public opinion in the South was evolving, denial of human and citizenship rights to AAs was generally recognized as illogical as it was illegal and unconstitutional. IMO, the subjugation of AAs was not sustainable, it was holding the South back economically.
