Trying to think positive...
1. Williams was really coming into her own, with 12-12 and 25-7 performances the last two games prior. It killed us to get 0 points from her. Hope she gets better, she was clearly injured and not herself. We aren't deep enough in the post to survive that.
2. Frank and Dembele had great games. Frank 22 points, 9-13 shooting, Dembele 16 points, 5-7 shooting. And the two combined for 7-10 on 3 point shots. Problem is, that was it. We aren’t going to beat a decent team like Arky on the road with just 2 players having good offensive games. I’m hoping Mama continues to get confident on her shot, and gets the green light from RP to be a little more aggressive offensively.
3. Blackwell and Hansen hit 3-12 and 4-13 from the field, respectively. When those two explosive players shoot a combined 28% from the field, we aren’t going to win often, particularly on the road. Their shots just weren’t falling, which happens sometimes. I swear all of Blackwells missed field goals were layups, except for her 2 missed 3 point shots. For some reason she was just off, seemed to be rushing her shots, and she usually is really good at finishing when she gets to the basket. Probably her worst offensive game of the season, and it came at the worst time.
4. I think we miss Troup. A lot. While her scoring is inconsistent from one game to the next, she steadies the team and the offense, and has a great assists to turnovers ratio. Hope she returns soon, fully recovered. Until she does we are not going to be the team we can be, and will struggle to some degree.
5. Give Arky credit. They played well, very tough, scrappy team, shot well, particularly when they were taking that early 11-11 tie and blowing out to a 17 point halftime lead. After that we never got closer than 9 points, and that was later in the 4th quarter. When they gave a top 10 Tennessee team all they could handle on the same court a week ago, they shot an anemic 8-40 (20%) from 3s. Yesterday they shot 11-27, 41%. When they are hitting their 3s they are tough. And they played the game they wanted, and took us out of ours. Our game was supposed to be half court, pound the ball inside to Williams and Blackwell, but with Williams being MIA on offense, and Blackwell missing tons of layups, that went out the window.
Next up is @ LSU on Thursday, a degree of magnitude more difficult than playing at Arky. That’s going to be a tough hill to climb. We really need all hands on deck for that game, healthy Williams, healthy Troup, and great offensive games from Frank, Blackwell and Hansen.
