What happened is that omicron lives primarily in the URT, not the lungs. Therefore, the viral load expelled with omicron is much, much greater than with the earlier variants.
Masks only stop some, not all, of the viruses expelled by breathing, coughing, or sneezing.
With omicron, the viral load that escapes the mask is now so great that as a practical matter, the masks are no longer effective though they previously were.
