The "story" of Gregg Marshall's departure from Wichita State is player abuse. Whether or not that is the case, that is the perception in the college basketball world.
If Mizzou were to hire Marshall and anything happen during his tenure that even remotely smacked of abuse, there would be a danger of a public outcry. Mizzou couold be forced into a position of having to fire Marshall and deal with a public perception that winning was more important to Mizzou than how the players were treated. Bluntly, this could occur even if the incidents were minor and not Marshall's fault.
Bluntly, the Tiger AD, the University Administration and the Currators would be fools to take the risk that could happen. That bad publicity would attach to far more than just the basketball program.
The criticism of Mizzou could easily extend far beyond the Men's Basketball Progrqm, even beyond the Athletic Department.
The risk of the possible downside far outweighs the upside of having a competent coach.
Further, if Marshall were hired, he would be wide open for "negative recruiting". How many recruiters from other schools whould find a time and place to have a queit conversation with the parents of a prospect and steer the conversation to "you the Mizzou coach had all those problems at Wichita State, do you really want to put your son in a situation where that could happen to him?
Bottom line is it's far better to pass on Marshall and not run the risk of these things happening.
