Historically, MO does have a stronger connection to the South than the North. As you mentioned, we're south of the Mason-Dixon line, and like Kentucky we were a so-called "border state" in the Civil War.

On top of that, we border 3 SEC states (4 if you count Oklahoma).

And yet there are still some SEC fans who call us "Yankees"... by comparison, KU called us "Slavers" when we were in the Big 12. I guess it's all relative.
