yes one can live off that,, no you can't buy non-essentials I was raised in a poor family, my mom stayed home til we were in school. many times meals with out meat, and stretched thin. no we didn't have expensive toys and yes we wore handi downs. If we would narrow welfare, put people to work inflation would come down. there is a dif between living and wants. BTW many that paid into Social Security for over 40 years get less than $20,000.. If their money had gone into a 401 they could pull out $30000 and never touch their principle. BTW those same people prepaid medicare and still have an amount taken out of their SS check.,,,, I started out with min. wage jobs,,, worked hard,,, moved up the ladder. most those working for min wage don't deserve that much.. it isn't about hand outs, it is about earning your own way.
