If you're paying less than $20,000 per year it simply means you're running a business whose labor requires little skill and provides less value. Those businesses are still useful in many regards - otherwise their customers wouldn't pay them for whatever they're doing.

Think of how much of your own lifestyle is due in part to people making $20,000ish (or whatever low arbitrary number).

You'd be paying a lot more for the goods and services you buy if those people were making $50,000/year.
