Early 80s when crude dropped to 10 bucks a bbl. ROI's became unacceptable and cutbacks were inevitable. Had a big one in 92....again due to tight spreads and single digit ROI's. Overall and looking back, I think the companies generally did the right thing. Productivity, especially in the staff and support sectors improved a lot and much of the job cuts were handled with attrition and enhanced retirement packages.
I could only wish guvmint would do some rationalization, but it will never happen, especially the SEIU gets to bargain with those they contribute to.
