For many it ties into movements like the free Mumia Abu-Jamal thing where they are attempting to free a man who killed a police officer. They take it for a movement with a strong agenda to find a way to spring convicts rather than an attempt to use more modern technology to look at past cases and determine if there may have been a mistake.

Again, that is just my guess.
