When a minority ethnic group is dehumanized an obvious defensive strategy is to cloak oneself in the religion of the majority group. As an attempt to demonstrate that I am not one of the bad members of the minority you hear about constantly I am one of the good ones. This could result in disproportionate representation in religious attendance or at least in claims of religious attendance.

An alternative theory is based on religious dogma. I.e. suffer the indignities of this life with quiet grace as you will get your reward in heaven. (Plutocrats really like this feature of religion). This may appeal more to people that are experiencing more indignities in life.

But speculating on the thought processes of people you do not know is a fools errand and I certainly do not have any expertise in the area. Just bar stool psychology.
