As you said yourself, there are avenues for the wrongfully accused officer to file a civil suit for defamation (assuming that state has no laws prohibiting such suit by the officer).
But if a person has died at the hands of an officer, the opinion by someone that it was murder will usually be protected because it's an opinion.
Opinion, with some limitations, is not slanderous in the world of defamation law and is ordinarily an affirmative defense to defeat a civil claim of defamation, whether it be slander or libel.
