The concept of a lesser program going to a better one for a guaranteed sum (and suffering a loss) has been around college football for a long time.
I don't recall the exact years (and won't trouble to look them up), but Don Faurot took the Tigers to the Horseshoe in Columbus for a number of consecutive years (something like eight or nine) in order to collect a big check to help the Tiger AD, if memory serves, pay off the cost of Memorial Stadium.
