The series should produce three wins for Mizzou. Secondly, by paying three or four such non-conference games each season, the program starts with three or four wins. If it plays .500 football in the SEC, it will have seven or eight wins and got to a bowl. The season will be a "success" even though the team was only .500 against comparable opponents.
There are a number of ways that lower level team can be compensated for playing, i.e. a flat amount, a percentage of the gate, a return game at the lower level team's home field. Generally, all of these can be structured so the better team comes away with more money than it would if it played a comparable level program under the traditional money arrangements.
The practice of scheduling lower level programs got started with some of the traditional powers. Nebraska comes to mind. The Husker program would get a lower level program to come to Lincoln by offerring it a guaranteed amount (but less than Nebraska would had had to given to get comparable Power Five prgorma to come). Nebraska fans were/are so fanatical that the NU home games sell out regardless of who the opponent is.
