If you want to plot a deep run in the NCAA tournament, if you aren’t going to get seeded in the 5-12 spots, getting seeded in the 13-16 spots isn’t so great. Sure you get a home regional, which is good, but if you win that, you are going against teams seeded 1-4, which means Oklahoma, UCLA, Alabama, etc in a super regional and have a real long shot to get to the WCWS. So you are almost better off being considered in the 21-28 range, go on the road where you at least have a decent chance to pull an upset and then win a super regional against a team probably seeded in the 5-12 range (barring upsets).
Just like in WBB and VB, the name of the game is avoiding playing the top 4 teams in the country as long as you can.
So I’d much rather we turn it on the rest of the way and maybe get an 11, 12, or 13 seed, because a 14, 15, 16 seed just gets us an almost unwinnable super regional.
