groups based upon the melanin levels found in their skin.

The groupings have the benefit of promoting us vs them rhetoric.

Sociologists have noted the average individual has a sphere of trust that extends to about 150 people. Using other commonalities, such as skin color, religion, or nationality has shown to be useful in extending that sphere of trust, while those who do not share the commonalities are distrusted as outsiders.

This has been effectively exploited by the ruling class to get one group to treat another group in ways that individuals would normally find morally reprehensible.
