civilians should have but aside from that automatic weapons are used in almost ZERO crimes and they are not readily available at all.

in order to buy one, you need a special license and they are prohibitively expensive b/c you can't buy one unless it was registered before 1986. so the supply is artificially low, thus the price is artificially high.
