just ignored the Fort, that would have forced the North to fire the first shot and would have brought the North that hated Southerners down on the President.
Heck if the South had proposed a bill to leave the union I doubt any Northern state would have voted against it, but firing on Ft Sumter just opened a can of worms against the South.
