oppressed have always been more likely to practice religion. When your life is shítty and there does not seem to be any prospects of improvement then the idea of an afterlife would be pretty tempting.
Don't forget that the oppressors always liked the underclass practicing religion too. People looking forward to an afterlife are less likely to ride up in this life.
