This is pure speculation on my part, but it would seem that during the years of slavery black people would turn to faith as a way to "escape" their daily lives, therefore putting a premium on religion. It's very similar to how people in feudalistic societies (peasants and serfs) would look at life on Earth as just a means to "get to the promised land".
Seeing as how we aren't that far removed (relatively speaking) from the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment, it would seem plausible that the grip of faith would still be strong within black communities, especially those in the South.
