and I know why. And that centers around some morbid thought Trumpsters think that he will try to run again in 2024. And no don't try to bs me about how it is about the constitution either.
In either case this particular issue has at least in a certain way already happened aka Belknap, granted he was not the president.
While you are spouting said provision you left out the part "The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments"
Meaning even the SCOTUS is very unlikely to get itself involved with this issue when it comes up and it will. Take heart however, even though a trial will happen, there aren't gonna be the requisite 2/3rd senators to convict either way, so Trump's ability to run again isn't in any real danger.
But as an exercise in legal thought, say perhaps that hypothetically that it is determined that former officials who have been impeached by the House and await trial by the Senate. Are you really okay with said officials being able to commit whatever crimes they want, pardon themselves, then be able to run for office again at some point just because a mythical clock ran out?
Don't think so. I would fully be in agreement that a former official is not subject to impeachment and trial #1 for things they did after leaving office and #2 if they had not already been impeached by the house prior to leaving office which. Neither of those 2 apply to Trump since he is currently the president and he was just impeached and is awaiting trial.
