That modem connects to a firewall. The firewall does not allow any connections through it except for the encrypted VPN tunnel established between the firewall on site and another firewall at a data center.
People just doing scans of IP addresses will not see any return traffic from that firewall... it will be as a black hole on the internet.
It is used all the time throughout the country for ATMs.
When idiots write articles about things they know nothing of, it draws in other idiots.
