we've been told for 9 months how bad Covid is. We have to stay home and close businesses. We can't have holiday celebrations or gatherings of any kind unless it's for social justice.

Doubling down is a lot easier than saying "well we know Covid is a nasty virus but are not yet sure on the actual statistical impact on things".
