I simply can't fathom how someone fails to comprehend this.

The flu and the covid are not the same things - one is seasonal and one is a pandemic. Millions of people working from home/wearing masks/using improved hygene and social distancing (even if all aren't doing the aforementioned) - reduces the flu. Those behaviors also reduce the spread of covid - they obviously haven't eliminated it, but areas that don't utilize those practices are the current covid hotbeds.
