I think there are programs Lock could have progressed better at. Having Heupel and Dooley gave him a wider view of how to play the game, but did they make him better? I think the talent was there and could have been guided better.
QB recruiting was definitely not his forte. Bryant came here, I have no doubt, because they guaranteed him he would start. And they had to. We had no starting QB (see first sentence of paragraph). That Bazelak came here, I'm not familiar with his recruiting but I would think he looked at a middlin program and thought he had a better chance of winning a starting job here than elsewhere. I'd actually be interested to hear his thoughts and may ask him at a game this season.
Not disagreeing here, but in-state recruiting, not important. Win, and you can in-state recruit. Win and the St. Louis kids come and you don't have to tell them how important to the program they are. We lost a couple of Rockbridge or Hickman kids to Nebraska during Pinkel's era bc/they didn't fit his team.
I think he grew as a HC but I don't know if I'd hire him as HC. Maybe at Arkansas he'll get the mentoring he needed. I bear him no grudge and wish him the best of success against all but Mizzou.
