math. A 3 pointer is worth 1.5 times more than a mid-range jumper. So a player needs to shoot at least 50% better from mid-range for the math to make sense. You can look at the NBA advanced stats here and see that almost no players do that (I couldn't find any that did but I didn't look too hard). For example, Seth Curry shoots the best from mid-range at 54%. He shoots 47% from behind the 3-point line though, so he's much more efficient when shooting from behind the 3. Also, shooting from behind the 3-point line opens up the lane more and provides more scoring opportunities.
