increase in suicide attempts by children. The kids are at basically zero risk for the virus, but they cannot play with their friends and they have to sit in plexiglass cubes at school or attend class via Zoom.

The "economics in one lesson" here is that you think these govt responses can be seamlessly applied without terrible, unintended consequences.

And if you think the US hasn't taken govt-enforced counter measures, then you are living in a parallel universe. The US has been overtaken by govt enforced covid reduction measures.

Despite the arrogance of bureaucrats, the virus will do what viruses do and has spread and will spread until each region in the US hits a herd immunity threshold. Total excess deaths this year will be slightly higher than the excess deaths from the bad flu season in 2018. We're living in an epic period of oversensationalism, political opportunism, and weakmindedness.
