That there does not have to actually be physical contact, one person touching another, in order for an infected person to spread the virus to an uninfected person. A common way the virus is spread is when an infected person produces respiratory droplets through talking, singing, exhaling, coughing, sneezing, etc when in close proximity to another person (less than 6 feet).
That is the very definition of what happens in volleyball on nearly every rally, when one team sets up a player for a kill and the other team puts up blockers right at the net, and at that point the opposing players are often just a foot or two away from each other, sometimes just inches away, with respiratory droplets flying around like crazy. It doesn’t matter in that situation if the close contact and respiratory droplets being exhaled and inhaled lasts just a few seconds, over and over again, as you say. The damage is done in just those few seconds.
There is a good reason why the SEC has designated volleyball in the highest risk Covid category, along with basketball and football.
Think about why they did that.
