A truth is an absolute. If I say I'm fat, one may say not really (based on the universe of morbidly obese people they hang out with) and another may wholeheartedly agree (like Iam4Mizzou who only hangs out with supermodels). So the truth would be based in that case on an arbitrary definition of what fat is (see what was sexy in the 20s-30s, we call them heffers today).
There are no truths in politics, just beliefs and beliefs aren't truths. Now you could argue the truths of what works and what doesn't but your arguments would be formed around your perspective more than any absolutes. Extremes are often held out as facts (facts in only that the first steps are the baby steps towards those extremes).
The problem is while some say their a lefty or conservative, they typically see themselves not as an outlier but more towards the norm. And considering how a bell curve is shaped, you can see that the population surrounding you would not be small (unless you were far the **** out there), and thus not really discernible and somewhat defensible in arguing. So one's perspective of what left and right are based on where they are centered, even if it's not truly the center. I hope you were drinking while you read this.
