economy is 7.7 trillion dollars a year. The United States is 4.5 % of the world population, consumes or manufactures about a 1/3 of the world's resources. It is 1/5 of the world's economy 70% consumer driven.
The economy has contacted since covid about 34% by some estimates. We are losing as a country about a trillion dollars a month and the stimulus was pumped in to offset the contraction and allow at some point a quick recovery. Clearly more stimulus is needed. But what is needed most is to find a way forward with a level of normalcy. Everything in life when there is chaos seeks equilibrium. Everything and there is no exception.
It is in this context that football is generally accepted as a mainstay in this country. College football fans are more passionate about the sport than the NFL simply because amateur sports is (maybe now the operative word is was) apolitical in nature and unifying. People from all political persuasions want this.
People still believe in hard work and that is the catalyst that can make you successful. College sports is the epitome of this.
At the power 5 schools they can afford the fifty-five thousand dollars a month for testing of their athletes. Protocols are in place where I honestly believe student athletes are better off than in the general population.
Playing this fall requires strong determined leadership which includes discussion and input from the athletes themselves. Those that postponed today didn't even bother to ask those most affected. I believe there are many that very much want to play this fall.
While I have been fearful of no football this fall for some time I am cautiously optimistic that there will be football. The SEC, ACC and wonder of wonders the Big 12 want to play or at a minimum keep the hope alive to play.
Perhaps enough will want to play to fill in the void for 1 year and that I believe will be further catalyst for change.
I know, crazy as that seems but I said it.
