in total cases. Which is of course a meaningless number unless it is put in context of a scale. You don’t compare Delaware to Missouri to Texas because of the vast population differences.
Actually, Missouri ranks 40th in the USA in cases per million population, at 4896 per million. See, I don’t mind using facts, even when they seem to make your case look stronger.
But before you get too excited, the total positive cases confirmed in Missouri over the last 4 months, and how that compares to other states, has absolutely nothing to do with whether Mizzou will have fall sports, and if so, what that will look like. That question has everything to do with the situation on the ground in Boone County, right now, and where the trends are pointing.
Positive cases are exploding in Boone County, which is what led to the mask ordinance 3 days ago. Weekly positive cases over the last 5 weeks here are: 30, 50, 77, 126, 210. Do you see a pattern or trend there? And so far this week we are on track to blow way past the 210 number from last week. Local contact case trackers here are overwhelmed by the recent surge in cases. If you care about seeing Mizzou sports this fall, watch the Boone County numbers. If they keep increasing exponentially, even before the 30,000 students descend on campus in a month, it will severely impact the likelihood sports are played here. And it won’t matter a bit what the virus spread is in Missouri as a whole, or in Springfield or Rolla or Maryville. What’s happening here in Boone County is what will drive the decision makers.
Take care and stay safe. And mask up.
