in the 1980s. You can have all of the radical beliefs you want, but if it shows up in your work or affects you work, you were out. I remember one kid who was covering the anti-apartheid protesters who built the shantys in front of Jesse Hall. He came back from one of their rallies singing "We Shall Overcome" in the newsroom. The managing editor and senior advisors pulled him aside and read him the riot act in front of the whole newsroom to let him know that it was unacceptable and if he couldn't abide by the rules of journalism he should go home right now.
