Our forefathers held those truths to be self-evident. They then created a document, our constitution, to codify those beliefs. They found them to be self-evident they did not claim that everyone did.
If life, liberty and pursuit of happiness are natural rights that everyone possesses then there was no need for them to be identified. Throughout history there is very little evidence of these rights being part of human nature. That is why The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution are such world changing documents. The US was one of the first Nations to say that all of their people had rights and then went on to build a government around those identifiable individual rights.
