But, you trust their statement was factual enough to know it has nothing to do with COVID-19,
There's no reason not to believe them that it was not COVID related. It would not be in their best interests to hide that from anyone.
When it hit the news it was obviously a public relations problem for them. If this was some COVID-19 related firing they were completely off the hook. No problem, a lot of people were being laid off. But that wasn't the case.
