Look at ku, they were #1 in kenpom by a huge margin over the second best team. They lost to Duke and Villinova away from home, had decent wins over Colorado and Stanford who were both top 45 caliber opponents, and then played in the craptastic Big 12. How did they accomplish that?

They also played Dayton and BYU away from Lawrence in the non-con, and avoided playing any atrocious teams. Dayton went 29-2, so beating them away from home was a huge deal in terms of the metrics that now dominate college basketball.
